HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 18

Requesting the West Virginia Division of Highways to name the
bridge on State Route 10, crossing the Guyandotte River at
Pecks Mill the "Homer D. Nelson Bridge."

Whereas, Homer D. Nelson, the son of the late Elmer Nelson, Sr.
and Focie Meeks Nelson, was born in Logan County where he grew to
manhood and later enlisted in the military service of this country;
and

Whereas, Homer D. Nelson served as a gunner aboard a helicopter
in Vietnam where he was tragically killed while returning hostile
fire in an effort to protect the members of his crew; and

Whereas, For gallantry in action related to his impeccable
military career and, particularly, his heroic efforts to protect
crew members aboard the helicopter he was on when he was hit by
enemy fire leading to his untimely death, he was awarded the
Gallantry Cross with the Vietnamese Palm emblem, which was the
highest honor bestowed by the South Vietnamese Government; and

Whereas, The citizens of Logan County and this State will
greatly benefit by preserving the memory of this gallant individual
who gave his life to protect freedom and his country; therefore,
be it

Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

That the bridge located on State Route 10, crossing the
Guyandotte River at Pecks Mill shall henceforth be known as the
"Homer D. Nelson Bridge"; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House is hereby
requested to forward a copy of this resolution to the West Virginia
State Department of Highways.
